Why the MZOO 3D Contoured Sleep Mask is The Best

The MZOO 3D Contoured Sleep Mask is the rare pick two independent panels put at the top. It was a Wirecutter top pick and the Guardian's best overall out of 32 masks tested across nine weeks. The reason is the molded eye cups. There is a convex gap so your eyes can open and close, ringed by memory foam that rests on the eye sockets, and one Wirecutter tester called it perfect for a nap in a sunny window. It drops the room into complete darkness the moment you put it on. What sealed it was the fit. Wirecutter's side sleepers, who usually give up on masks, found this one stayed on all night without light leaking at the nose bridge. All of that costs under twenty dollars.

What It Won't Do

The foam cups run warmer than silk, so hot sleepers may sweat, and it is hand wash only. The cheap foam also wears out faster than a heritage silk mask, so plan to replace it more often.

Why the Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask is the Best Value

The Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask is Wirecutter's silky top pick for around fifteen dollars, and it wins on a quality the MZOO cannot match. The mulberry silk stays cool even pressed against skin all night, which is why Caira Blackwell's testers reached for it on long-haul flights and in warm rooms. It was popular with every tester regardless of sleep style, and the flat design lies flush on a pillow, so stomach sleepers can finally use a mask. The Guardian ranked it best budget. It does not seal like a contoured cup, but for hot sleepers and travelers it is the softer, cheaper, more forgiving choice.

What It Won't Do

Several long-term Wirecutter testers said it slipped off mid-night unless they retightened the strap every couple of nights, and the thin strap felt scratchy behind the ears. The flat silk also blocks less light than a cup mask.

The Competition

#3 Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask
$31.99 MSRP

Wirecutter's lightweight contoured top pick, with full blackout and a wide Velcro strap that fits heads from 14 to 26 inches, though the nose cutout is stiffer than rivals and the brand's seven-year-winner claim leans on its own marketing.

#4 Manta Original Sleep Mask
$39 MSRP

The customizable pick from both the Guardian and Wirecutter, with removable Velcro eye cups and the deepest blackout in the group, though the cups press uncomfortably for side and stomach sleepers and it costs about $39.

Check Price
#5 Drowsy Silk Sleep Mask
$79 MSRP

The Guardian's best silk mask, with dense 22-momme mulberry silk and the only design their tester found put zero pressure on the eyes, though at $79 it is the priciest here and too tall for side sleepers.

Check Price
#6 Nodpod Weighted Sleep Mask
$38 MSRP

The Guardian's best weighted pick, a strap-free microbead mask that drapes over the eyes for gentle pressure, though the company itself says it is for napping rather than all-night wear.

Check Price
#7 Ostrichpillow Eye Mask
$45 MSRP

The Guardian's best travel pick, one of the few masks that made the field of vision pitch black, at just 1.1 ounces, though the rigid build rules out side and stomach sleepers.
