Two independent roundups, Popular Science and knowledgelib.io, both crowned the Twelve South DeskPad their Best Overall, and CNN Underscored's editors keep one on their own desks. The reason is balance. The cushioned vegan-leather top is soft enough to rest your wrists on yet still gives a mouse a clean glide, the surface shrugs off spills and warm mugs, and the whole thing comes from a real brand at around $40. It does the core job of a desk pad better than pads that cost twice as much.
What It Won't Do
It comes in one size and one plain surface. If you want a spread of size options you look to the Grovemade, and if you want a cable holder or hidden paper slot you look to the Orbitkey.
No budget pad showed up more often than the YSAGi. It was the go-to cheap pick in four of the six roundups, and for around $14 it delivers a large 31.5-inch waterproof surface that wipes clean and even flips to a second color. The build gives away the price, with cut edges instead of stitched ones, but for the money nothing else covers a desk this well.
What It Won't Do
The cut edges and a crease at the fold line show it is a budget pad, there is no wrist cushioning, and YSAGi is an anonymous Amazon label with no warranty behind it.
